Vancouver Alpen Club

The MePlusFood team got our first invite to a Vancouver Food Blogger dinner, and we were really excited. We went to the Vancouver Alpen House on 33rd and Victoria in Vancouver. We were a bit nervous, but everyone was welcoming, and they were happy to talk to us noobies. The place also serves as a place for the elderly to meet up, as there was a back room where a lot of them were congregating and playing cards and games. I think upstairs they have dances and I heard they have live Polka music there.

We were given some sliced bread and butter to munch on while we chatted and ordered our food. The menu isn’t that big, so it wasn’t too hard to decide on what we wanted to eat. While the majority of people got the meat platter for 4 for $80, a few of us decided to go on our own and order individual entrees. They were having a deal where you could get a schnitzel dish and a beer for only $15. I ordered the Zigeunerschnitzel – pork schnitzel, spicy gispy sauce, and spatzle and a wheat beer. This was basically pork culet that was pounded out thin, breaded then fried. It had a red sauce with it, but it was actually not very spicy (am I building up my heat tollerance?). The sauce was OK, it added a tomato sauce like flavouring to my pork, but it wasn’t too over powering and definitely not very spicy. The sauce had some veggies like zuchini in it also. The spatzle was pretty good though. The first time I had spatzle it was very bland, and not very good. This one was better. It was seasoned lightly, and had a bit of herb garnish. I no longer hate spatzel =). The wheat beer I had came in a huge glass, seemed bigger than the others. At first it had a bit of a weird after taste to it, but the more I drank the more I enjoyed it.

Beipas ordered the Schweineschnitzel, which was just a regular pork schnitzel with fried potatoes and veggies. It wasn’t very good, as the pork was a bit dryer since it had no sauce. It did come with a bit of dijon mustard on the side though, but I think that alone as a sauce is far too overpowering. The best schnitzel dish was probably the Jagerschnitzel, which came with a nice mushroom sauce.

Unfortunately the team didn’t get to try the festplatte, which came with a bunch of different sausages, meats, a schnitzel, along with some mashed potatoes, dumplings, red cabagge, and sauerkraut on the side. You’ll have to read some of the other food bloggers post for that one.

Overall, the service was decent. The restaurant is pretty dark, because it’s actually kind of underground. There aren’t very many German restaurants around, so this is my first time having some in a few years. I’d probably come back to try something else.

On a side note, supposedly there may have been some rats or mice running around that night, but the MePlusFood team didn’t notice any.

Nice to meet you guys! It’s always fun when we get together as a group. We must do this again… in Surrey!
