We came to The Eatery because it was the only restaurant we could get a table at during the Olympics. Not that this place wasn’t busy at all, we just got lucky because a couple tables had just cleared right before we got there.
We went in and didn’t really expect anything, but this place is pretty funky. They had a live DJ playing pretty decent music, the place is dim, they were projecting an Japanese anime cartoon on one of their walls, and if you look up there were paper mache creatures including an Astro boy.
Their menu is huge. There were so many items, included quite a few vegetarian selections too. There was a lot to read. We ordered quite a few items for our party of 7. I’d say overall, the food was really good, and there were a couple items worth mentioning.
Tuna Tempura was a really good appetizer. If you like Tuna Tataki, you would probably like this dish too. The tuna slices were deep fried in tempura batter, they were fried just enough to sear the outside of the tuna, the inside is still raw. It was topped with mayo, sweet sauce, and came it with a dipping sauce. Something I’ve never had, really good.
The Electric Banana Roll was the best thing I ate that night. Deep fried banana on a sushi roll along with avocado and unagi, how did they come up with this surprisingly tasty roll? The sweetness of the banana, just worked with everything else, so tasty. It was a shock to the taste buds, in a really good way. I loved it.
The Miss Piggy Roll was a good one to get for bacon lovers. 2 strips of bacon wrapped with scallops, asparagus, and unagi sauce. mmm yummy. The Volcano was a big one. It was deep fried roll with tuna, scallops, salmon and a mountain of crab meat on top with spicy sauce. Delicious.
Since there were so many vegetarian selections, we decided to try their Green Decadence roll. It had tempura green onions, asparagus, avocado, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. It came warm, which was a bit weird, and it tasted OK. Not as good as the seafood rolls of course.
We also tried a couple desserts here: Caribbean Fantasy and Malaysian Fantasy. They were really good as well. The quality of cream and ice cream were good, although I think it would’ve tasted better if the waitress had given us spoons instead of forks for our melting ice creams. Why would you give us forks for ice cream?
This place was a really nice surprise. I’m usually pretty skeptical about fusion foods, but the Eatery had done really well. The selections were big, and it was nice to see the variations weren’t just different pieces of fish on a California roll, they all had different ingredients. Very creative on naming the dishes as well, it definitely gave a boost to a customer’s curiosity. The atmosphere was young and fun. A good place to eat for the young and adventurous.

One Comment on "The Eatery for fun, creative Sushi."
The dragon and astroboy are made of toys. I remember them saying that the artist searched for toys to build those things and refused to paint them since that was cheating.
Anyway, it’s always fun in there! I like the rolls with cream cheese in them. mmm yum.
