Thai Rin Restaurant and Bar, Kona Hawaii

I went to Thai Rin Restaurant because my friend had a craving for Thai food while we were in Hawaii. Thai Rin is located in the middle of the strip of restaurants on Alii Drive. It’s got a great location, with a great view.

We arrived relatively late for lunch. The menu had a lot of items and lunch specials, but I wasn’t all that hungry, and I wanted something refreshing. I ordered a Papaya Salad, and my friends got their Soup, Fried Noodles, and a Tofu Curry.

The Papaya Salad came in a pretty large portion for appetizer. It looked fresh and delicious. It tasted, salty. And a warning for vegetarians, the Papaya Salad has fish sauce in it. It’s got so much sauce, that I couldn’t taste the green papayas. It wasn’t very fresh tasting at all. I was disappointed. I still managed to eat most of it on its own, because I didn’t want to waste food, but it just got way too salty for me towards the end.

My friends thought their dishes were pretty mediocre, except for the one that got Fried Noodles. I had a taste of their food, and I thought the best one out of the 3 was the Fried Noodles, the rest was pretty similar to my own Papaya Salad, disappointment.

On the dessert section of the menu I saw Taro with Coconut Milk and Tapioca. I like taro, I like coconut, and I love tapioca! I ordered it before I decided on my main dish. After I finally got rid of the papaya salad taste in my mouth, the dessert was pretty good. The taro flavor it in was really nice, the coconut milk was delicious and the tapioca was cooked well. Then as I kept eating it, it started to get extremely sweet for me. It ended up like the papaya salad, I tried my best, but the flavor was just too strong for me to finish.

Two dishes I got were extremely salty or extremely sweet. I felt like my taste buds just got an extreme work out. The prices were semi-reasonable, but I would not recommend this place for tourists. Save your money, and get better food at Island Lava Java next door or Da Poke Shack down the street.
