My personal “Best Steak I Ever Had” was at Del Frisco’s in Las Vegas. My friend said his was at Peter Luger Steak House in Brooklyn, NY.
Peter Luger steakhouse is a very popular place. One of the reasons why I decided to go was because they also mentioned it on the TV show Entourage, which I’m currently finishing up. The place was packed with people in the main bar/lobby area, and there were plenty of parties celebrating there as well.
We each started with the Luger’s Sizzling Bacon, and we shared the USDA Prime Steak for Two, and a Rib Steak. We ordered some Luger’s Special German Fried Potatoes, and Creamed Spinach for our sides.
The bacon was amazing. Sure, it’s $4 for one slice, but one slice is all you need. The bacon is cut extra thick, with the perfect amount of meat, and fat. It’s perfectly seasoned, and not too salty. Don’t really know how to explain it, but just order it if you are a bacon lover.
Our steaks came shortly after, precut. The steak for two, is a huge porterhouse with a good amount of filet, and sirloin. The rib steak came on the bone as well, and precut. They were all cooked perfectly with a slight crust. My favourite was the filet, and that was definitely the best filet I’ve ever had. It was so tender and juicy, it almost just melted. The Rib Steak was the next best. Honestly, the size of this Rib Steak for that price is pretty good value. It was huge, and came a lot bigger than we were used to seeing when it’s on the bone. And the sirloin, while still good were the least favourite. It wasn’t as tender as the others, and has a stronger flavour.
The German Fried Potatoes were just OK. Nothing special when compared to how awesome the steaks were. The creamed spinach was nice. Soft spinach, with a bit of creaminess. Would’ve been extra good with some of that bacon in there!
For dessert, we knew we had to try their famous “Schlag” or whip cream, so we listened to our waiter and ordered the NY Cheese Cake, and a Pecan Pie. Again, best Cheese Cake I’ve ever had. The NY style cheesecake is baked, and still very creamy. It had the perfect texture, and the crust tasted great too. It was just a plain cheese cake, and their awesome schlag. No berries or anything, and it was wonderful.
When I saw that they were cash only on Urbanspoon, I thought it was a typo. At the front it says they accept either Cash, or the Peter Luger Credit Card, I thought that was a joke. It does turn out it is Cash Only though, so bring a lot of cash. You and a date are likely to spend over a couple hundred here. Our bill, complete with steaks, a bottle of wine, drinks, and desserts was just shy of $400 for 3 people. We did have a bit of left overs too, and don’t be shy to take the bone home to eat later. Plenty of other people, as well as us did it.
Next time I go, I’ll have to order a burger. While it’s only available at lunch time, if you “know” the owner, you can order it for dinner too. I think I’ll have to make a stop at lunch on my next trip.
