Last week after my sister’s convocation, we went to Milestones on Lougheed for a celebration dinner. I wasn’t all that enthusiastic about dinner at first, because I was never really a fan of milestones. But this summer the menu featured 3 items from Top Chef Canada, I’ve seen the episode and I was looking forward to trying those winning dishes from the challenge.
We started the meal with Pork Croquette, it was the winner appetizer from the show. The pork croquette was literally deep fried meatballs. I though there would be some kind of potato in there, but it didn’t. It came out a little burnt, and the minced meat inside was dry. The meatballs were served on top of deep fried onions that were really soggy and oily. I don’t even think I tasted onion because the batter was so bad. This appetizer, was a fail.
For entree, both my Dad and I ordered another Top Chef dish: Roasted Sablefish with Seaweed gnocchi. This dish in real life does not look as good as the picture on their menu.
There was a lot of broth on my dish, but very little on my dad’s, lack of consistency right there. The gnocchi looked really soaked in my dish, and it was pretty bland. The fish itself had a very buttery taste, but that was pretty much the only flavor. The broth was tasted like soy sauce. Overall this dish just didn’t work for me at all, was it Asian or was it Italian? I don’t know, it was confusing and not tasty at all. I lost my appetite pretty early on. I had to force myself to finish the expensive part (fish).
Another item on their seasonal menu was Seafood risotto. This dish was not spectacular, but it was a lot better than the sablefish.
The only dish that I thought was decent was their Butternut Squash Ravioli from the regular menu. The ravioli was packed with butternut squash filling, and it just had enough sweetness. The pasta on the ravioli was cooked al-dente.
I didn’t try the Top Chef dessert, because I lost my interest in eating anything more while I was having my entree.
I am pretty sure these Top Chef Canada dishes don’t taste as bad when the real chefs made it, at least I hope not.
I am still not impressed with milestones, and probably will not return unless I really have to. Stick to their regular menu for semi decent food, because the chefs at this milestones just sucks at making other people’s dishes.
