Mean Poutine

On the hunt for more awesome poutine, a VancityBuzz reader mentioned that an alternative to Fritz for late night eats is Mean Poutine on Nelson and Granville. They are just a small little shop, that offer a lot of different flavours, and the price isn’t too bad. Besides the Standard Poutine, they also have Fried Chicken, Philly Cheesesteak, Mean Supreme, Mama’s Meatball, Southern BBQ, and even Candied Yam Poutine. Or you can also build your own. You can get some Hotdogs too.

I ordered the Classic Poutine and the Fried Chicken Poutine. The beer bettered fries are fried fresh, so at 5PM, I did have to wait about 15 minutes to get my order. Before bringing the take out to my friends place. I took a look so I can get fresh pictures. The cheese was already very melted, and a lot thinner than the other poutines we’ve had. Because of the batter, the fries kind of resembled KFC fries, where you could see the light airy batter bubble a bit and crisp up. These were quite a bit fatter though. The Fried Chicken poutine came with boneless buffalo chicken (probably frozen), where some were spicy, and others weren’t that spicy. The meat was still very tender and not dry though. The gravy was a bit salty, and the slight spiciness helped cut a bit of the saltiness. The Classic Poutine was good too. The cheese was gooey, though the gravy was salty, but not as salty as Fritz.

Overall, I like the poutine here a bit better, because it is cheaper. There is only one size, and they range from $6-9 and there is a lot of it. I think it’ll definitely hit the spot late at night, but I’ll have to try it myself on a drunken night. Don’t expect authentic though.
