I ended last weeks food Party in the USA surprisingly, in Surrey. On our way home, I caught a glimpse of a restaurant called Luna Loca which I’ve never seen before. I only had one meal that day so I was pretty hungry. We decided to eat here before we went home.
We were seated quickly and they started us off with the standard chips and salsa. The chips were good, and seemed to be freshly made, or at least freshly fried, but there was something about the salsa that made it seem like it was from a jar. It wasn’t fresh tomatoes, peppers, onions and herbs, but rather a thick tomato sauce with some chunks of tomato and peppers. Kinda like Pace Piquante sauce hehe.. I don’t know, I wasn’t a big fan though. And if you wanted more you’d have to pay another $3.95. Mexican restaurants I’ve been to just give you an unlimited supply.
I ordered the empanadas because I’ve never had Mexican empanadas, only Filipino ones, so I was interested. My meal came with two empanadas, a salad, some rice, black beans, and a couple of tortillas. I wasn’t a fan of the salad and the black beans at all. The salad was just strips of lettuce with a tomato dressing of some sort. Kind of like the sauce you’d get in one of those premade mexican taco salads. But, it was sadly missing cheese or something else. I also don’t like black beans. I wish I got the refried beans instead. The black beans were kind of tough, but I think that’s normal. Black beans just aren’t for me. The rice and empanadas were pretty good though. The empanadas were fried and stuffed with potatoes, and some meat. I’m not sure if I’d have it again, but I’d say they are better than Filipino empanadas. They are definitely filling.
There were a couple things on the menu that I’d probably come back to try, and I think they have happy hour between 4-6 PM on weekdays where they serve 1/2 price appies. They also have deep fried ice cream here. I don’t think there’s much competition for them in Surrey when it comes to Mexican food.
We were the last ones in the restaurant, and they left a nice pile of garbage for us to step over on our way out. They were also very slow in taking my credit card even though we were the only customers left!
Supposedly Nira Aurora from the Beat was sitting behind me. I didn’t notice though.

I went there with my family, I’m in a wheelchair so needed to use the handicap washroom, but I couldn’t use it as it’s a storage room. We left to go find another restaurant with a handicap washroom that isn’t used for storage

wow that’s so horrible, Gilles. Sorry to hear about that.

I got a coupon for this restaurant once, but I never got around to go there. And from the looks of the pictures, I probably will not go either.
