Lulu’s Big Island’s Tourist Trap

Lulu’s at Kailua, Kona was a really hard to miss restaurant on Alii Dr. It’s got a great location, right across from the ocean. It’s on the second floor, so it’s got a great view of the ocean for its customers. At night this place looks really flashy, bright with neon lights, and the music was always pumping. It definitely looked like one of the very young and happening place to eat at. It only looked like it was a cool place to eat at.

This was a bar/restaurant. We got there for dinner, and sat ourselves at a table. We waited for a long time for the waiter to come, long enough for us to think if we’re supposed to go up to the bar to order food, long enough for us to consider hopping to another restaurant.  Maybe 10 – 15 minutes later, the waiter finally showed up with their menu. The menu had regular bar food, burgers, wings, and sandwiches. When we asked the waiter what was good there, he answered unenthusiastically: ‘well, everything’. It was not very convincing.

I wasn’t in the mood to swallow another big greasy burger, so I ordered a Grilled Mahi Mahi Sandwich. We also asked for waters when we order our food, and guess when the water came. The water came with our food, which was another 20 minutes of wait, what kind of restaurant does that?

When the food finally came, it looked unimpressive. My Grilled Mahi Mahi was a little dry, but it wasn’t horrible. Maybe my expectations of it gone down with its looks. My friend however, could not swallow her food. She got a Vegetarian Quesadilla, she said it was nasty, so I didn’t even bother trying it when she offered.

We were so wrong about this place. The decor was grungy, ‘hip’, but it was also very sleazy.  The music you hear when you drive by, was from the restaurant downstairs. They actually played really horrible 80′s music. It really felt like they were stuck in a time warp back in the early 90′s when the things used to be cool, is not so cool anymore.

Tourist trap, the people who gave 5 stars for this place, must have been drunk out of their minds.
