La Masia Restaurant and Tapa Bar

La Masia is a Spanish / Tapas restaurant near the border between Surrey and Langley. I always see the restaurant on the left side of Fraser Hwy when on my way to Langley.
I went to this restaurant on November 28, 2009 because our first choice was gone (I think went out of business). So, this was the only other close by restaurant that I could think of that I wanted to try, though I drove from one side of Surrey to the other in the pouring rain to get here. Anyways, I think I heard good things about this restaurant but I’ve read mixed reviews about La Masia on line. I believe there was a Christmas party there, as an entire room was filled but the restaurant was fairly empty on a Friday night.
The ambiance was very dim, and I guess romantic. We were seated by the window, with an excellent view of the parking lot. They served us some cheese bread to start even before we ordered which was nice. After we received our bread though, we probably had the slowest service ever (I’ll explain more later). The tapas on the dinner menu were pretty much all seafood, which sucks for me because I don’t eat seafood, not by choice, but because I’m allergic. I think there were only two items that weren’t seafood, and same goes for pretty much the entire menu. The menu at the restaurant seems a lot different than what is posted online. Anyways I ordered the French Onion soup which was the best I’ve ever had, and the Solomillo de Cordero which is Lamb Sirloin pan-seared, baked to a medium rare and served with a mint demi-glace. They also had some roasted veggies on the side, which my friend liked even more than her pasta. My food was good, but I’m not sure if it’s something I’d have again.
My friend ordered the Soup of the Day which was a Lobster soup of some sort, and the Fettuccine con Pescado which is shrimp and crab in a creamy dill sauce. She said her pasta was way too salty, and didn’t eat more than half of it and didn’t want to take the rest of it home. I guess it wasn’t good at all. She did eat all of her veggies though.
Now comes the slow part. We both were waiting to go, but our server paid no attention to us after they served us our food, and the mandatory “How is everything?” 5 minutes later. I tried to make eye contact with any of the servers that walked by so we could ask for the bill, but none would. I think it wasn’t until we were sitting around for 15 minutes that I was able to get a server’s attention and get my bill, which still took another few minutes to come. I quickly checked the bill, and put my credit card in. Guess what, we waited over 5 minutes and all of the servers just walked past us. No one would grab the credit card so we can pay and finally get out of here. I finally got fed up and put my jacket on, and just walked to the front counter and paid.
The place isn’t very cheap. In terms of places I regularly eat, I’d say this is in the medium-high side of the price range. Our meal of 2 ice teas, 2 soup, and 2 entres costed $70, and we left not very satisfied, both with the food, and the slow service. I honestly wish I was able to try some of the tapas, but I don’t think I will be going back.
Due to the VERY slow service I have to give this restaurant 2 stars. I’m not coming back.
Sorry for the lack of pictures, but it was very dark, and the camera on my Blackberry Curve sucks.
