Highland Pub the only place to drink at SFU

Working at SFU, my team goes here fairly often (once every month or two), whenever we have a birthday or finish the production of courses for the next semester, so I’ve tried quite a few things on the menu. I wouldn’t say I love the place, but it’s the closest restaurant to us! It’s pretty much the only place close that you can sit down and eat.

The Highland Pub is owned by the SFU Student Society in the Maggie Benston Centre. They have your typical pub food. Mostly sandwiches and burgers, quesadillas, nachos. They also have some asian bowls now too.

Last time I went here, I ordered the Philly cheesesteak sandwich. It was roast beef, with some mushroom, peppers and onions with melted cheese on a hoagie bun, served with either fries or a salad for $9.49. The meat was a bit dry for my liking, but the cheese and veggies made it a bit better. The bread wasn’t too hard to bite, and it went well with my food. I ordered fries with my food, and they were fried perfectly. Nice and crispy on the outside. You can also order the “Yam Wedges” which come with a tamarind aioli. I’m not a fan of this at all. They are pretty thick wedges, and are kind of mushy. I want my potatoes crispy!

I’ve also had a bunch of other thins on their menu, like chicken strips, chicken wings, burgers, quesadillas, and the reuben sandwich. Out of all of these, I’d probably recommend the burgers. It’s what most people get, and probably the best on their menu, and they have a wide selection of burgers.

The service is so-so. Sometimes they forget things when you ask for something extra on the side (like Mayo on the side). Actually now that I think about it, last time they screwed up the birthday girl’s veggie burger, and got it mixed up with another persons.

I guess don’t come here with high expectations and you shouldn’t be disappointed. It’s a pub run by students, so you can’t expect too much.
