Foundation, Vegetarian on Main

Ever since I had a great vegetarian meal at The Coup in Calgary, I have been on the hunt for an equally awesome vegetarian restaurant in Vancouver. After getting some recommendations, I visited the Foundation on Main street.

This was definitely a place for the young and the hipsters. The atmosphere was totally casual with hip hop music spinning in the background, old school furniture and jam jars as glasses for water.

The menu had a lot of interesting stuff on it, and quite a few of them sounded really appealing to me. After going through some back and forth, my friend and I decided to share Sesame Society and Last Option. Dee got a Bentonio Burger and we also got a plate of small Nachos to share.

The Sesame Society was tofu and vegetables with sesame sauce, quinoa, and spinach. It was kind of like a salad but not really because the spinach was raw, and the vegetables and tofu in was cooked in sesame sauce. The sesame sauce had a nice sweetness to it, and I got lots of it. It was pretty tasty and it got a hearty feel to it. Don’t take too much time on eating this dish, it tastes way better while it’s still warm.

Last Option was a vegetable coconut curry served on basmati rice. It was topped with apple slices and coconut flakes. I liked this dish a lot. The curry was really tasty, and it got a bit of a kick to it. It was mildly spicy, really nice. I liked it a lot better than Sesame Society.

Dee didn’t like his Bentonia Burger at all. I have to say, it didn’t look all that appetizing either, especially the fake bacon.  After trying it, the burger was really dry. I thought the patty was too thick, and it was one of the reason why the burger was dry. Also, it was pretty bland.

I think my favorite of the meal was the Nachos. The portion of the ‘small’ nachos was really big and it was served on a really big plate. It had black beans, and corn with melted cheese on top. We asked for guacamole ($2.00 extra), and that guacamole was really fresh and delicious. The salsa was fresh, and I was really glad that they were dingy on the guacamole, sour cream and salsa portions.

I thought the food was pretty average. Service wasn’t the greatest, although the waiter was friendly. We had asked him to give us the nachos first as appetizer, but we didn’t get it until we’re almost half way through our entrées.  This place opens late, I’d imagine this would be a better place to just get drinks and hang out with friends. I’m also still interested in going back to try their other dishes.

I didn’t like my burger because it had a weird consistency. It wasn’t really a burger patty, but more like an extra thick paste that could hold it’s shape some what. No.. bite to it? I’m not really sure how to explain it. The bacon, although looked strange was OK. Had a bit of a crisp to it, but obviously not the same yummy crispy fattiness.

The bread that it came with was OK. The salad was decent, and I think I enjoyed it more than the burger.
