Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro is really in downtown Bellingham, and is actually very family oriented and very popular. We had to wait for about 30 minutes at 6 PM on a Friday to get seated. They do have those pagers to let you know when your table is ready, but I think they said it only has a 1 block radius. After sampling tons of beer in Europe, we were excited to see that they had a beer sampler here.

We immediately started with a beer sampler which comes with 6 beers, ranging from 5% to 8.5% – Blonde Ale, ESB, Amber Ale, Scotch Ale, India Pale Ale, and an Oatmeal Stout. Our favourites were the ESB, Amber Ale, and Oatmeal Stout. Our least favourite was the Blonde Ale. The sampler glasses were quite large (larger than what we had in Prague), and we got pretty buzzed from it.

To eat, we ordered the Tapenade, and Ralf’s Bavarian Pretzel. The tapenade was very tasty, and not super salty like some tapenades that I’ve had. It was lightened up even more with some cream cheese. What made it interesting was the addition of a sprout and tomato salad with balsamic vinegar which went very nicely with the tapenade and a fluffy foccacia bread. The pretzel was brought later on, and we actually forgot about it for a while as we were enjoying our mains. It wasn’t anything awesome, and it came with a spicy mustard. We probably should have ate it while warm.

The Mac and Cheese was pure deliciousness, and only $9. This is one of the best traditional macaroni  and cheese dishes I’ve had at a restaurant. Most places are a bit too watery, or not very rich, but this had the perfect amount of cheesiness. The topping was nice and crunchy too. I’d definitely come back for this and beer. Totally worth the $9 and more.

The Centre Cut Porkchops were juicy but a bit firm and marinated seasoned with mustard and coriander. It was served with a warm apple chutney, mashed potatoes, and crisp steamed green beans. The lamb burger was probably our least favourite, which was served on a pretzel bun. The bun was different, but the lamb patty was quite plain.

Come back for the beer and mac and cheese!
