Baru Latino

First dine out of the year for the MePlusFood crew, we went to Baru Latino.

I picked this place mainly because I wanted to try their paella and other Latin American food.

It was good that we made a reservation, because this place was super busy. From the dine out menu I had the Ceviche for appy, and the Paella for main.

The Ceviche had lots of shrimp, and halibut. It had a very nice limey taste, good flavors from the onion and tomato. On the side it came with a piece of, I believe plantain chip. I think it was supposed to be crispy, but it was rather soft and stale. It was a nice appetizer, minus the “chip”.

On our table, we also had the Chili Prawns, and the Empenadas. The Chili Prawns were pretty nice. The hot sauce was actually spicy, really nice kick but not over powering. I had some of the beef empenadas and actually don’t remember how the beef filling tasted like because the wrap was really crispy. That was all I could think about, the wrap was really crispy!

My paella came with a load of seafood. There was mussels, prawns, scallops, halibut. The seafood was fresh, I could still taste the sweetness of the mussels. The chorizo sausages were really nice too because they were a little bit spicy.

Each time I had paella I get a different version of it. This one was more saucy than the ones I’ve had before, and I liked it.

2 people at our table ordered the Braised Beef Short Ribs for main, and they have mixed reviews for this dish. Dee enjoyed the beef, he totally waxed the plate. Our other friend however thought the beef was too dry. Apparently there was a fat end and a skinny end to the beef, the fat end was really tender and really nice, and the skinny end wasn’t so great. I had a piece of the skinny end, and I had agree, it was a bit dry.

There was only 1 dessert option for the dine out menu. It was flan with blackberry compote and gooseberry. The dessert was really sweet, but goood. The flan was smooth, the blackberry compote was a little bit seedy, but it was nice and sweet. There was also some really nice orange and raspberry sauce on the plate which added other flavors with the flan.

Overall, this dine out experience was better than I expected. The paella and the dessert were the 2 dishes I would come back for.
