Applause in Marpole is that Japanese restaurant I always drive by but never thought about trying. It turned out this was one of my friend’s favorite spots for Japanese food, so we all went for a dinner here.
Our group decided to order 1 item per person to share. We had some very fresh sockeye salmon sashimi, followed by a spicy tuna roll and a super avocado-creamy caterpillar roll. All were very fresh and delicious.
After the sushi, we had grilled items such as Grilled Eggplant, Black Cod, and Squid. The eggplant had a miso glazed. Every scoop had perfectly softened eggplant and sweetness from the miso. You can find similar eggplant dish at Tokyo Thyme and Kishimoto.
My friend also said we had to try the Sukiyaki, dish he said he’d order almost every time. This was indeed very good. I always find sukiyaki too salty because of its soy sauce based soup, but this wasn’t. There were lots of toppings in this soup including tofu, fish cake, thinly sliced pork, shitaki mushroom and seaweed. A very dish to order on a cold, rainy day.
Honestly, given the location, I was quite surprised to find this restaurant to be Japanese owned, and the food was actually good. It was a good find in the Marpole neighbourhood.

Ooo the sukiyaki does look quite tasty, although the portion is a bit small? I’ll have to try this spot out. Have you tried the taiwan beef noodle place nearby? Total greasy spoon place, but also tasty!

Glad to hear the sashimi you had was fresh-tasting. This used to be my go-to Japanese restaurant (despite the distance I would have to travel) until I was served tasteless sashimi on multiple visits. Nevertheless, I agree that the Yaki Nasu (grilled eggplant) is really good! The gyoza here are not bad, also.

oo this is by Anna’s house that I always drive past too and thought about tryiing
