I was first introduced to Thierry Patisserie by a friend. She was telling me that this french pastry shop has amazing macaron and how they have real fruit inside some of the fruit flavoured  macarons such as blackberry and raspberry.

I have visited Thierry a number of times since then, and each time especially for their macarons. About half of those times I walked away with disappointment because they’d be all sold out or they’d only have the flavours I have already tried.

Out of all the times I’ve been I managed to try their pistachio, coffee, lemon, passion fruit, ginger bread and raspberry macarons. Honestly, these were really good macarons. It’s the texture that I liked the most. They outside was crunch when you bite into it, but the inside was soft and chewy. I really dig the chewy texture.

Flavour wise, some of them were really sweet, like passion fruit while the ginger bread (it was special of the day) had more subtle taste. The raspberry one had real raspberry inside, pretty cool.

They have pretty good coffee there. I’d usually get an americano or a latte.  One time my friend and I shared a hazelnut liquid chocolate, think of it as a very very dense hot chocolate. I think it’s ok to sip this chocolate while eating none sweet pastries, otherwise it really just be too sweet.

This place was opened a couple months ago and it is still seriously busy all the time. If you don’t think you like macarons, you have to come try them out at this place, they will change your mind.

I first saw 7 Sweet Sins when I went to a Canucks game last year, and finally tried it out this week. They have lots of desserts in their display case, and they have ice cream served on the other half of the counter. Many of the desserts look good and they had a wide variety from tarts, cheesecakes, regular cakes, mousses, and many more.

I chose a Caramel Apple Cheesecake, and my friend had a Bailey’s Chocolate Mousse. I also had a hot chocolate.

I don’t know what I was thinking. I guess I get tricked every time I see the word caramel. Apple and cheesecake isn’t a really good mix. The cheesecake on its own would be good. It had cooked apples on top with crumbled graham crackers, and drizzled with a bit of caramel. The caramel was thick in consistency, but in thin strips. The cheesecake had a nice consistency and not too sweet. I wish the crust was a bit firmer. But overall it was a pretty light dessert. The main thing is that apple isn’t typically a topping for cheesecake. Give me a berry topping any time.

The Bailey’s Mousse had two layers and topped with a lot of chocolate shavings. The Mousse was very strong in Bailey’s flavour. My friend didn’t really like it, and neither did I. It was way too strong and overpowered the rest of the dessert. Each dessert is around $5.

I’ve had quite an afternoon tea weekend, one home made with friends and one at Faubourg in Kerrisdale.

Faubourg bakery is super busy on weekends. When we tried to make a reservation for high tea, we were instructed to leave a voicemail to make the reservation. We didn’t get any phone calls back, but we went anyway. We ended up waiting for an hour and a half for a table for high tea.

Normally, waiting for over an hour for a restaurant is pretty awful, not let alone for tea. We waited because this place seemed really promising. Aside for a little section for high tea, they also have a retail section for pastries, breads, and coffees. We ended up getting a chocolate croissant, strawberry tart and a chocolate twist while we waited. I listed them in the order of my favorites.

The chocolate croissant was really amazing. It was fluffy, buttery, and it had a lot of soft dark chocolates. I could eat 3 of these at a time.

The strawberry tart had fresh strawberries, and custard with vanilla beans. Normally I don’t go too crazy for custard, but this was pretty good. It wasn’t too sweet, and it was a nice compliment to the tart itself.

The chocolate twist was a bit dry for my liking, it needed a bit more chocolate.

For our high tea, we went with the Pink Afternoon Tea menu.

For the savory sandwiches, we got smoked salmon, and cucumber with roast beef. There was also a chicken sandwich on the menu, but they had ran out of them, so we got some more pastries instead.

I was quite disappointed with their sandwiches. Both of them were pretty bland. The beef and cucumber were dry, and the beef was a bit tough. The smoked salmon sandwiches lacked consistency. We had 3 smoked salmon sandwiches, and they had different greens in them, not sure if that was intentional.

The first thing we ate on the 2 tier plates was the Raspberry Souffle. The waiter suggested we eat it while it’s warm. The souffle was warm and had really light in texture, and it nice raspberry flavors.

The scones came with jam and cream. While the scones were nice, I really wished we’d get mascapone cheese or devonshire to go with them. Plain old whipping cream just don’t quit cut it.

It didn’t really take us that long to realized that we hyped this place up for ourselves too much.

We left the place feeling mixed because the bakery itself was seriously good, but the high tea part was just mediocre.

I’d definitely come back for their breads and pastries, but as for high tea, Secret Garden is still the best.

For my very first ever high tea experience, I went to Adonia Tea House in Kerrisdale with 3 friends. None of us had ever been to high tea before, so we weren’t too sure what to expect besides tea and a tower of little sandwiches, pastries, and sweets. We were a bit weirded out by our first impression. It was quite a small place, with just one big table, our table for 4, and the rest were tables for 2. The decor was very old fashioned, very tea party like, with tea cups, saucers, teapots decorated in flowers. As we were almost finished, the place was packed with women, so two of us boys felt a bit out of place.

They had a wide selection of teas to choose from. I ordered the Cream Caramel, while my friends ordered Tirimisu, Honey bush, and a Mango-something tea. I didn’t really like my tea at first but it got better as I drank more of it and mixed it with some rock sugar. The tirimisu was pretty bad, and smelled and tasted kind of like medicine. I liked the mango tea the most. It tasted fruity and smelled amazing.

After a short wait we were started with a potato salad topped with a shrimp. Obviously I couldn’t eat it but it looked good. Our tower of food came first. The bottom tier were all sandwiches. There was a cucumber sandwich, an egg salad sandwich on a little cheese bun, an croissant sandwich with ham, tomato and lettuce, and a ham and cheese sandwich. My favourite of the bunch was the ham and cheese sandwich, because it was very flavourful. It was a good ham with a good thickness to it, and I a really good cheese which I think was asiago as it had a pretty solid texture. The other sandwiches were OK – the cucumber sandwich was pretty basic, but fresh. The egg salad was pretty bland, and thought it could use more salt.

The second tier was a mix of smoked salmon sandwiches, and some savoury tarts and quiches. I was OK with the mushroom quiche, but my friends didn’t really like it. I wasn’t a big fan of the anti pasto tart which was filled with roasted red peppers and other vegetables in a phyllo type shell.

The third tier were the desserts which consisted a variety of chocolates, and some fruit tarts. These were delicious. I really liked the fruit tart which had a mix of kiwi, berries and pineapple with a nice custard, on a crunchy shell. The chocolates were very rich. Watch out if you have nut allergies because I think some had hazelnuts. Luckily for me, none had peanuts.

In the middle of high tea (I’m having a tough time calling this a meal even though I was full at the end) they also brought out a few other dishes. They brought scones – 2 raspberry scones, a cheese scone, and a cheese & chive scone. These scones are amazing. Warm and buttery, but still a dense texture. It was so good. I’m not sure which one was the best, they were all delicious. Honestly, until recently, I’ve had a bad impression of scones – I must stop buying grocery store scones. The blueberry scone from Avenue Bakery is amazing, and honestly this one may be better, but in a savoury way.

We were also given a plate of little cakes filled with cream, and topped with a raspberry and a Christmas decorated piece of white chocolate. This was also very good together. The cake alone was a bit dry, but the cream and raspberry helped moisten it up. For dessert, we were given some strawberry panna cotta which was delicious as well, but some of the spoons looked like they had some rest build up. We used our tea spoons instead.

Honestly, this may not really be my scene. First of all I’m not really a tea drinker, and the dainty food is not quite my thing. There were some delicious things that I tried, and I’d probably order them on their own. I’m glad I experienced this with my good friends, some of which are moving to Australia for a few years. The service was pretty good, as they usually came by to fill our tea pots, and knew what was in the food they were serving. One thing that bugged me though is that afternoon high tea is listed at $25 on their website, but we were billed $30 each. To me that’s quite expensive for a lunch.

A couple weeks ago my friend brought me to Siegel’s Bagels for some bagel sandwiches and bagels to bring home.

Siegel’s Bagels sells authentic Montreal Style Bagels. There was an in house wood burning oven to baked the bagels, and there were more than 10 flavors of bagels to choose from.

I ordered a Candied Smoked Salmon Bagel on everything bagel for my lunch. I had a really high expectation for my salmon bagel, because I absolutely love smoked salmon bagels. This was the first time however, I tried candied smoked salmon on a bagel.

First thing I noticed when I bit into my bagel was, it was not toasted. I’m not sure if I was supposed to ask for it to be toasted because the cashier didn’t ask me about it. The candied smoked salmon was a little bit sweet and a little bit salty. They were dried, kind of like salmon jerky. The everything bagel was pretty good. The bagel was dense, and a little bit sweet. It’s got a good chewy texture. I have to say, I was a little bit disappointed with the cold bagel sandwich. Having the bagels toasted, would have made a huge difference for me.

My friend ordered the Lox and Cream sandwich. Other than using smoked Sakai salmon instead of the candied smoked salmon, they had the same ingredients.

Half way through our sandwiches we spotted a sign for stuffed bagels at the counter. We were intrigued so we ordered a Spinach and Feta stuffed bagel to try. I would really suggest not to order this unless it was freshly out of the oven. The spinach and feta stuffed bagel we got had been sitting in the warmer for a while, and it was soggie, oily, and pretty much tasteless. Huge disappointment, totally not what we were expecting. It was a bad version of spanakopita.

Honestly, I don’t really know what the difference between a Montreal Style Bagel and regular bagel. After my meal I also took home half a dozen bagels and I noticed the Montreal style bagels were somewhat skinner and more dense compared to regular bagels. Also There was definetly a sweetness to all the bagels I tried, which was nice.

You can get bagels here anytime of the day because they open 24 hours a day. Not a bad place to do a bagel run.

My friend and I visited the bakery to for those monster cookie sandwiches. We knew we wanted their Chocolate Sandwiches (a.k.a homemade Oreo) and their Peanut Butter Sandwiches, and knowing us, how can we really walk away from a bakery with just cookie sandwiches. We also got a Pecan Bar, a Hello Dolly Bar, and a Coconut & Pineapple Scone.

I had the Pecan and Hello Dolly Bars first and they were really awesome. I loved the Pecan Bar at first bite. It had really nice gooey caramel and lots of pecans. It was like eating a really good pecan pie in a bar form, sweet, gooey and buttery. The Hello Dolly Bar had coconut, chocolate, condensed milk and pecans.  It had more texture and flavors than the pecan bar, and it was also really yummy.

Ok, these cookie sandwiches were serious cookie sandwiches. The Chocolate Sandwich was really really big, probably 3 inches in diameter. It was two soft chocolate cookies with vanilla cream in between. My first thought on the first bite, it’s so sweet! It was really sweet, and I think it’s mostly from the vanilla cream. I could barely taste the chocolate from the cookies. I can’t say I enjoyed them as much as I did with the bars.

The Peanut Butter Sandwiches were just a tiny bit smaller than the Chocolate Sandwiches. They were 2 soft peanut butter cookies with peanut butter cream in between. I liked these more than the Oreos, because the saltiness from the peanut butter really nice there to balance out the sweetness.

After eating 1/3 of each cookie sandwich, I was stuffed, and I still have a giant Coconut & Pineapple Scone left. Of course, I ate some, and it was one of the few things I do not regret over stuff myself with. The scone was so good. One of the best I’ve had. The outer part was really flaky and buttery. It was very moist and dense and soft inside. It was packed with coconut. I didn’t taste much of the pineapple, but it was for sure very buttery. Very yummy.

The bakery smelled really nice when we first walked in. The staff were really nice and they were all busy making a ton of those cookie sandwiches. We were a bit disappointed that we couldn’t get their pies because they are only avaliable on Saturdays, or you can pre-order them. They also have scones/muffins of the day, so each day there will be different kinds of scones. It’s best to call in and see what they have before your visit if you see something you’re interested on their website. I know I’m going back to get one or 2 of their pies.

I was in Yaletown looking for a quick bite for dinner, and I went to Boulangerie la Parisienne to get some sandwiches.

Boulangerie la Parisienne is a  French bakery located in Yaletown.  They had a lot of cakes, pastries, cookies in their display counter, and they all looked really appetizing.  Since it’s a bakery, and I only had sandwiches there,  I should clarify that this review will be based on their sandwiches only.

There were a lot of different types of sandwiches, pre-made, in a display case. I wanted the Smoked Salmon sandwich originally, but they ran out, so I got their Vegetarian Sandwich instead. The Vegetarian sandwich had tomato, lettuce, avocado, and bocconcini cheese with herb french bread.

The sandwich was put under a panini press because I asked the sandwich to be toasted. The panini made a lot of difference to the sandwich. It melted the cheese, the bread was nice and crusty on the outside, the heat from the panini press helped brought out a lot of the flavors. The sandwich had decent flavors, but mostly came from the herb bread.

I probably would not order sandwiches here again. Since the sandwiches were all pre-made, they weren’t particularly fresh.

It was an open space bakery, there were no walls between the inside of the bakery and their ‘patio’. Having said it’s an open space restaurant, there were quite flies flying around in the bakery while I was there. That was a little bit disturbing.

I was really tempted to get some of their pastries too, but I just didn’t have enough time for them. A lot of their pastries reminded me a lot of Boulangerie Cho Pain, another French bakery in Vancouver. Maybe they are related, because I swear, some of the pastries I saw, were exactly the same in both bakeries.

Final word, the sandwiches, were disappointing. However, I’m still interested in try their pastries.

I first came across Bon Chaz at EAT! Vancouver. I had a sample of their original buns and I remembered it to be so yummy that I had to go visit their store.

On Saturday I was looking for a place to have coffee with a couple friends, we went to Bon Chaz to get some coffee and also those delicious buns. This place was really spacious for a bakery café. There’s a book shelf with a few books, and scrabble on it. It looked like they were trying to accomplish it as a place for people to spend at least an hour and a half in.

My friends and I got there knowing exactly what we wanted. We wanted to try every single type of buns they have and we got all 4 flavors, plus the daily special bun. The 4 flavors were, Original, Banana Walnut, Green Tea, and Apple Cinnamon. The special of the day was a Vanilla Cream bun.

These buns at Bonchaz were soft buns with a flaky, crusty cookie like crust on the top. If you are familiar with Chinese pastry, they reminded me a lot of those Pineapple buns. Actually with the texture of the crust, and the texture and density of the bread itself, they are very smiliar.

The buns were really fantastic when they fresh out of the oven. They had great aroma, with the crusty top and the super soft bread. Each bite was warm, soft, and crusty, so yummy. I suggest you eat this as soon as you can after they’ve been pulled out of the oven for you, because just like most pastries, the warmer it is, the better.

The Original didn’t have any fillings in it. And for the Banana Walnut, each bite you’d get the soft, and sweet banana in the middle. The Green Tea bun had green tea cream filling inside and it was topped with toasty coconut flakes on the top. It was also pretty good, green tea lovers might love this.

This was a great alternative café to hang out at. They had decent coffee and tea. Out of all 4 different flavors, I liked the Original and Banana Walnut the best. I’d love to see the new flavors they’d come up in the future.

I walked to Trees Organic for some dessert with my friends because our plan to watch a movie was a bust. I’ve never heard or been to this place. I was brought here by my friends as they refer it as ‘that cheesecake place on Richards street’.

I walked to this place expecting a dessert shop, but it was only a coffee shop that sell cheesecakes. We got there half an hour before they close  (8pm on Sundays), and there were only 4 kinds of cheesecakes available.

The lady at the counter was really nice, she let us try the Mocha Cheesecake, it was pretty nice, but I wasn’t feeling chocolate that night, so I went with the Almond & Marzipan Cheesecake.

What is a marzipan? I had no clue, but I like almond. The cheesecake was served on a plate, with chocolate and caramel sauce drizzled on the top with whip cream on the side. My friend got the last slice of Blueberry Cheesecake, and he also got chocolate and caramel sauce drizzled on the top. I guess the do that with all their cheesecakes.

The Almond Cheesecake was pretty nice. It was creamy and very almondy. All I could taste was almond, which was good, but that means I also still don’t know what marzipan tastes like. The cake’s texture was light, the serving size wasn’t that big, but it was a heavy cake. It took me a while to eat it, and I couldn’t finish it.

The Blueberry Cheesecake seemed like a popular choice there. There were a couple people that came in and asked for it, too bad we took the last piece. Neener neener! But honestly, the blueberry cheesecake was good, but it wasn’t the best I’ve had. And that goes the same with the almond cheesecake. I remember seeing a sign in the store saying ‘the best cheesecake in Vancouver’. I don’t think I would agree.

I also got a coffee with my cheesecake, it wasn’t anything spectacular either.

The decor of this place was pretty cool. On one of their walls at the cashier counter, had the recipe for their cheesecake crust written on it. Just in case you want to know what you’re eating I guess? The shop was spacious, bright, with high ceilings. The staff here were really friendly. This would be good place for a quick hang out.

I’ve walked down Davie street numerous times but I’ve never noticed this little bakery called Boulangerie Cho Pain. I think I should be embarrassed, because this place seemed really popular with the locals.

This bakery specializes in European bread and rolls. They also have a large selection of sweet pastries.

I went in on an afternoon, looking for a small dessert. There were so many selections on display, it was really hard to pick just one.  I finally decided on a Paris Brest, while my friend got their Almond Chocolate Croissant.

The Paris Brest was really good. It was sort of like an open cream puff, with the choux pastry ring split and filled with cream. The ring had a cream puff consistency but with more moisture. The top half of the ring was covered in chocolate and something else that gave it a chewy consistency. The quality of the hazelnut cream was really good.There was a lot of cream, but I didn’t get sick of it at all. I think it had something to do with the surprise fresh raspberries that were buried in the cream.

The Almond Chocolate Croissant was good, but not spectacular. It had a lemon paste in the croissant, which made some part of the croissant moist, and some parts flaky. For dessert, the Paris Brest was a lot better.

I also had a cup of espresso here, the quality of beans they use were good too.

I think the most popular item here was their baguette. There were a couple people came into the store asking for baguettes, but they were already sold out at 2pm. Now I’m curious on just how good these baguettes are. I must come back to get these baguettes.

Alright, I promised you to get a review on Swiss Bakery‘s Valentine’s specials before Valentine’s day, and here it is! …and some more.

They had quite a few Valentine’s special selections, they were mostly some sort of chocolate that were shaped like hearts. So many selections and I narrowed it down to 3. Chocolate mousse cake, Chocolate Ganache cake, and Salted Caramel Tarts.

The chocolate mousse cake was really good. The mousse was light, and fluffy, the whole thing was chocolaty, but not too sweet. It had a really good texture, and it kind of just melted in my mouth.

I recommend the Chocolate Ganache cake for serious chocoholics. It was very chocolaty, very good, but a little too sweet for my taste. If you ever crave chocolate, this is the cake that would do it.

My favorite out of the 3 would be the Salted Caramel Tart. It was a small heart shaped tart, with a chocolate crust, caramel filling and a few rocks of salt on top. It’s a perfect bite size, and the salt on top actually added a nice contrast to the sweetness of the caramel and the crust, very yummy.

Alright I visited the bakery during lunch time, and I hadn’t had anything to eat that day, so I also bought one of their Pretzel bread Sandwiches. I actually wanted everything in sight because I was so hungry. Anyways, I’ve read praise reviews about these sandwiches, so it was a no brainer for me to get it. There were 3 kinds of sandwiches, turkey, ham and roast beef. I tried the Roast Beef with Pretzel Bread.

The sandwiches was so yummy! It was big, a little bit more than a 6 inch sub. The pretzel bread was really good, it was like eating a bagel sandwich but BETTER. The sandwich had mayo, roast beef, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and cheddar cheese. Yes! no Kraft single slices, way to go! This sandwich is actually something I would crave for, the pretzel bread was just so yummy, you gotta go try it.

The Secret Garden Tea Company is one of the places to go for afternoon, or high tea in Vancouver. This was my second time visiting Secret Garden, and the food quality was definitely a lot more tasty and memorable than my first time here.

This is a really busy tea house, on a weekend you probably will not get a table without a reservation. There were 3 high tea reservations times: 12pm, 2pm and 4pm. Each reservation has a 2 hour time limit. The deal for high tea for this place is you make a reservation, and you select your tea once you have arrived, you don’t have a choice on the food. The food would come in 3-tier platters including sandwiches, pastry, and scones.

They had a really large selection of teas. I was given a tea menu at the table, there was about 4 pages of teas. I decided to go with the good old fashion Earl Grey, while my friend got the Secret Garden’s Secret. The Earl Grey was good, it had a really intense flavor, however, I really recommend the Secret Garden’s Secret. It had a really nice aroma, and the taste was consistent with the smell, unlike other flavored teas. And I also thought it went better with all the food than Earl Grey.

The system to the 3-tier platter was to start from the bottom, and work your way up. The bottom tier of food was delicate sandwiches, included: egg salad rolls, crackers, and mini croissant sandwiches. The egg salad rolls was very light and creamy. The mini croissant sandwiches were REALLY good. The ingredients on the crackers and in the sandwiches are different from day to day. The sandwich we had had cold cuts, aged cheese, with roasted vegetables. It was really really yummy.

The 2nd tier was my favorite. It had miniature cranberry scones with Devonshire cream and raspberry jam. It was so yummy. The scones were not dry, and all together with the devonshire cream and raspberry jam, so good! so good.

Lastly the very top layer was pastries. They came in 3 types of pastries, but they almost always have the lemon tart because it’s one of Secret Garden’s specialties. Personally I think the lemon tarts were OK, and the pastries were good in general.

The food might not seem like a lot when they were presented on the tiers, but they were actually really filling. After 2 hours of tea drinking and eating, I still had to box some home. The rating for the quality of food and tea was no doubt 5/5.

If you’re wondering how this place end up with only 4 stars, I was a bit peeved about where I got seated. We got stuck on a very small table that was very close to the bathroom. It was such a bad location for diners because I could smell the cleaning detergents from the bathroom from time to time. It was a very high traffic area for the restaurant as there was always people going to and out from the restrooms. Having to already made an reservation 2 days in advance, you’d think they seat us at a better location. I disliked my table so much, that I don’t think they should put a table there at all. Never compromise your customer’s experience to maximize your profit.

Also the waitress was not very attentive at all. She only came to ask to refill our tea pots twice. And we waited forever to let her to box up our leftovers and give us our bill. 3 stars for the environment and poor service.

High Tea here is $25.95 per person.

This is a really good place to go to spend a relaxing afternoon, to catch up with your friends. Even though my experience was ruined a little bit by the staff and were I got seated, I’d still come back or bring my friends here.

I first had Swiss bakery‘s Christmas Stollen and gingerbread man at a house party. I’m never really big on Christmas desserts, but I really liked the Christmas stollen. The stollen is very dense, but moist. It is like a fruit cake except so much better. They certainly didn’t skimp out on the fruit ingredients they put in there, as the stollens only come in 1lb, or 2 lbs loaves. That’s serious bread business. I look forward to have them again next Christmas.

I decided to pay a visit to the bakery a few days later to pick up some bread and baked goods for my own Christmas dinner. Like always, when I visit a bakery, I left with more than I went for. I got the stollen, and the gingerbread man, and I also picked up their very famous Pretzels. They sell these everyday, but sells out really fast. I was in luck that there were only 2 left when I got there, I brought both of the home. These pretzels are a little funny looking compared to the regular ones, but they were good, and soft. The amount of salt on top was just enough. I like.

I still really want to go back to try other European bread products there because I’ve heard a lot of good things about this place. Also, they’ve just came out with Valentine’s day specials, I’ll make sure I’ll do a review on them before Valentine’s day this time.
