Japanese food in Burnaby

Makoto

Makoto

Makoto is a small authentic Japanese restaurant located in South Burnaby. The chef (who is also the owner) is very friendly and talkative. However, I must say the service was a bit slow because there were only two people working (the owner and another person).

Kilala Sushi Bar

This small sushi restaurant located in Burnaby is really a hidden gem. My friend and I decided to try out this place on a weekday. The restaurant itself was not packed. However, the rush hour traffic on Hastings Street made it a bit challenging to get to the restaurant.

Sushimoto was a restaurant that I frequently visited back in my university days. I had kind of forgotten about this place until a friend of mine asked if we can explore good Japanese restaurants in Burnaby. I immediately thought of Sushimoto.

Van-Ya is the place my sister have been raving about for the past little while. It is pretty much her favorite place to get nabeyaki udon at the moment. She finally brought me there last week to celebrate Chinese New Year.

Hi Genki is a restaurant situated in a Japanese old folk’s home in Burnaby that I’ve heard so much about. I finally I went in for lunch with my sister, specifically for their Japanese lunch boxes. We got there around noon, and we already have to wait for a table.

Kura is another Japanese restaurant near my work place on Kingsway in Burnaby. Their menu is fairly large and have a large assortment of Japanese dishes. They’ve been in Burnaby/Vancouver for 17 years now, and they have cheap promotions to celebrate that anniversary. They’ve also been in Tokyo for 25.

Tang Tang Sushi and Fish Market

Tang Tang is a really small shop, a bit hard to notice it, as it’s kind of hidden in the back of the complex. We went in and sat down, and waited for a few minutes to get a menu (though only one person was in the restaurant at the time). We both decided on ordering a bento box as well as some sushi on the side.

Sushi Garden on Kingsway, Burnaby

Sushi Garden is located on Kingsway near Metrotown, on a block that is embedded with probably 5 other sushi restaurants. For a Japanese restaurant with 5 other competitors competing right beside it, this restaurant was doing pretty well on its own.

Sushi Oyama in Burnaby

Sushi Oyama in Burnaby

I never ever noticed Sushi Oyama, or even the building, even though it’s right by NCIX (for us geeks) on Kingsway. Well, I was kind of shocked seeing that it was a Japanese restaurant in a stone house. Their Grand Opening Sign is still up, but my friends had already been there 6 months ago. At the front was a nice water-fall wall thing (I had a picture but I underexposed). The restaurant had two separate rooms with two separate sushi bars. They also had an upstairs, but I wasn’t sure what was up there.

Nao Sushi is one of my frequent restaurants to visit for lunch. I’ve tried most of the items on their menu, and never had a disappointment.
