These cookies are really large and plump, and all individually sealed, and perfect size to snack on. They are very soft and pretty fresh cookies.

My favourite of the bunch was the Dried Cranberry and Toasted Hazelnut. I’m a really big fan of dried cranberries, be it in salads, or just to snack on. I really enjoyed them in this cookie as it gave the oat cookie a nice tart flavour. Paired with creamy sweetness of hazelnut (another one of my favourites), I couldn’t resist.

Beipas’ favourite was the Dark Chocolate with Tart Cherry and Pecans. It has a 70% cocoa content. I’m not a big fan of dark chocolate, but this wasn’t too bitter for me. I enjoyed this one as well. The pecans were crunchy and went well with the tart cherries.

We were a bit underwhelmed with the Apricot, Ginger and Slivered Almonds. For me, the cookie seemed a little bit too raw or under baked. Maybe it was just my cookie, but the texture bothered me. I think the other two cookies flavours were more appealing to me.

These cookies can be purchased from many grocery stories around Metro Vancouver for about $2.75 a pop. Be sure to try it out, for some delicious, and healthy cookies made out of the finest ingredients.

I was first introduced to O.N.E Coconut water at my bikrams yoga class. It was a drink highly recommended by all the yoga instructors to keep you hydrated during and after the class. Ever since I bought my first O.N.E Coconut water juice box, I was hooked.

It offers 15 times the amount of potassium as most sports drinks with less sugar and less calories. I have since replaced all my sports drinks with O.N.E whenever I can. The thing about O.N.E is that it’s so hard to get a hold of. You can order them on amazon.com and the only grocery store that I know sells them for sure is Whole Foods.

I’ve tried a number of coconut water from different brands, such as Zico Coconut water, I found O.N.E tastes the best.

There are different flavors for O.N.E coconut water, but I’ve always stuck with the original. I love coconut too much to try other things.

If you love coconut, you’ll love this drink. If not, it’s not as bad as you think it’d taste.

The last day was just as hard as the first! It’s just the knowing of tomorrow I get to ease back into normal food just gets me too excited.

I almost wanted to give up at mid day thinking what difference would it make if I stop half a day short. But, I can’t let the past 4.5 days go to waste, I held it out, and I survived.

I had 3 chocolate shakes left, but drinking chocolate all day is just silly. I’d still prefer strawberry over chocolate for breakfast.

Day Snack: oatmeal bar

The last oatmeal bar of the reset. I made myself to eat this bar because I was going for a bike ride after. I needed the energy.

Exercise: 20 min easy bike riding

My friends and I rode our bikes around the neighbourhood taking bbt orders from our friends, only to find we didn’t have time to actually go buy them. It was fun showing up at people’s house randomly though.

Lunch: Skipped

First meal I ever skipped. I didn’t have a lunch shake today. After bike riding I wasn’t particularly hungry  or in the mood for a shake, and I opted for fruit snacks instead.

Afternoon Snacks: Blueberries, peanut butter bar and tons of water

This was the time when I was thinking about cutting the reset short. Knowing I have one last shake left to drink kind of dreads me.

Dinner: Chocolate Shake

Last shake ever! w00t! The chocolate shake did it’s job as usual. I was full after the drink, and my cravings went away immediately.

I did it! My first ever body cleanse. It was not easy, and I am not sure if I want to do this again any time soon. It was kind of hardcore. The first and the last days were the hardest for me.

I woke up this morning (day 6) feeling great. I am in the good mood because I followed the program and completed it. I am in the good mood because I get to eat normal food again. This program definitely put me in a good habit of drinking water constantly.

In terms of how I feel physically, I feel normal. Except the first day, I havent’ had any crashes after a meal or during any time of the day. Other than that I can’t tell the difference, but maybe I will be able to in the next couple weeks.

In terms of weight loss. I lost a total of… dun dun dun!… 3.2 lbs. I weight myself everyday, and it was an up and down process. I’d lose 2 lbs in a day, and I’ll gain 1 back the next. I wish my scale wasn’t broken on measuring body fat, muscles, and water %, because I’d really like to know if the weight I lost were just water weights.

Body cleanse program completed! I hope my organs are happy now.

This is getting easier.

I had quite a busy schedule today, it’s kind of neat that I could pack my lunch, dinner and snacks all in my laptop bag.

My energy level was still good today. I think I average 7-8 hours of sleep during this reset, a couple hours more than usual. That could probably be one of the reasons I didn’t need any caffeine to get me through the day.

Today I ate this bar not because I wanted to chew, but because I got hungry. That was a first in 4 days.

Lunch: Chocolate Shake

Yup! Chocolate Shake! No vanilla. My friend had some extra chocolate shake laying around, I took that instead.

Afternoon snack: cherry tomatoes, half of peanut butter bar

I got hungry again! This is weird. The snacks were able to last me until dinner.

Exercise: 15 min bike riding

This was supposed to be a 1 hour bike ride along the seawall, but it was cut short because my friend had a head on collision with another biker. I saw both of them flew in front of me when it happened, pretty crazy. Lesson learned: Keep your heads up and eyes forward when biking!

Dinner: Chocolate shake, health pack, the rest of peanut butter bar, frozen grapes

The usual dinner. This time I almost forgot to take the health pack. Frozen grapes are pretty awesome.

Just 1 more day to go, booya! Fighting off temptations today was really easy. I was able to watch other people cook and eat, sit in the same kitchen where people made banana breads. Normally the smell of baked goods would just get me, but not today! Maybe the day after tomorrow.

I kind of felt great today, knowing there’s only going to be 2 days left after today. I’m almost there!

So it has been 3 days, I did notice a slight drop of weight. In terms what how I feel overall, I feel pretty normal. My energy level is good, I can get through the day without naps or coffee.

I drink a lot more water than usual, not because I am forcing myself to, my body just wants me to. This is a good change, because I normally drink more coffee in a day than water.

Writing food reviews got easier, but that’s probably because I was writing something I didn’t really enjoy eating.

I am so glad I did this in the summer when most of the yummy fruits are in season. Fresh produce rocks.

I was kind of looking forward to the chocolate shake. Chocolatey dinner is always good.

Exercise: 1 hour at driving range

It’s been more than a month since I went to a driving range. I felt kind of rusty, but it always feels good to whack some balls as hard as I can.

Day 3 is done! So excited. I only got cravings twice today. Once was when a friend messaged me about celebratory meal after all this is done. And the other time was late night when I got hungry. I was craving for the steak & frits with syrah wine we got from the trip to Napa.

The day seems a lot longer when I am on Usana Reset.

I wish I could have a vietnamese sub, and a bowl of sodium filled ramen noodles would be real nice right now. I wish today was day 5.

The strawberry shake went down a lot better today. It didn’t taste as artificial as the day before, could this mean I am used to the taste?

Day Snack: Oatmeal Bar

Around 12pm, I started munching on the oatmeal bar. Again, it wasn’t like I was hungry, I just wanted to chew something. This oatmeal bar took me about 30mins to finish.

Lunch: Vanilla Shake

I was thinking of skipping this meal because I just wasn’t hungry. I made myself the shake anyway, thinking skipping this meal will only make me eat my dinner earlier, and therefore mess up my eating schedule. I better stick to the program.

I was thinking, since strawberry tasted good this morning, the rest should be ok. The vanilla shake tasted worse than the day before. Not sure what it was, but I didn’t like it today at all.

Exercise: Walking dog in Bear Creek Park trying to find Matt Damon filming a movie

I walked for about 40mins. I saw a helicopter flying up and down, saw the film crew, no Matt Damon was sighted.

Afternoon Snack: Half a peanut butter bar, one whole grapefruit

It’s official, the peanut butter bar is my favorite item in the reset kit. It’s delicious. Grapefruit was amazing, again favorite part of my day, eating fresh produce.

Dinner: Chocolate shake, the rest of peanut butter bar, health pack

Chocolate shake still tastes the best out of all 3 flavors. One of the things I really don’t like about the reset kit is the pungent vitamins I got to take. I just don’t like the after taste, but today I found a solution. I took them with my chocolate shake. No vitamin after taste lingering in my mouth, just chocolate, awesome!

Day 2 felt really long, but it wasn’t as bad as day 1. It doesn’t feel like I am on a body cleanse or even a weight loss program because I am eating so constantly. Except when I think about what I should have for the next meal, I’d get reminded that I can only eat whats given in the kit and a couple servings of fresh fruit.

Day 2′s challenge was the thought of doing it for another 3 days. Mind over matter. I can do this…. right?

I never got around to the reset kit until now, because I had too many food outings already planned. There was birthdays, graduations, more birthdays, etc etc. Then I went on an unexpected trip to Asia eating all kinds of yummy asia food I could eat 24/7.

This reset program takes a total of 5 days, and I tell you, setting yourself up to 5 days of shakes and nutrition bars is not easy, especially when you are a food blogger.

I got home a couple weeks ago, and before my food schedule gets busy again, I thought this was the time to do it.

I have been eating a month of really good food, but they were also junk foods. They were everything deep fried, preserved, high MSG, etc. My body needs a cleanse. Will I really shed 5 lbs after 5 days? We’ll see.

Here’s how my day 1 of high-fiber cleanse goes:

Breakfast thoughts: Strawberry shake was very sweet, and had an artificial after taste, but I can get over it…or will I? I also didn’t finish the shake, I tried, but it was too filling.

Day Snack: Half an oatmeal bar

Around 11am I started to feel a little snacky. Not hungry, but just wanted to chew something. The oatmeal bar was not bad.

Lunch: Vanilla shake

The vanilla shake was better than the strawberry shake taste wise. I also tried to finish it this time, but I also got full before I could.

Afternoon Snacks: the rest of oatmeal bar, blueberries

Between 2-5pm was the worst for me, self control was put to the test. I wasn’t hungry, but I just wanted to eat anything that was not sweet. I had some fresh blueberries around, and they were so delicious. This was the time when I really appreciated all natural foods. I probably had more than suggested fruit serving amount munching on those blueberries.

I crave coffee.

Exercise: 1 hr Bike Ride, Snack: Half a peanut butter bar

The peanut butter bar tastes way better than the oatmeal bar. I like it. Bike riding hurts my butt.

Dinner: Chocolate Shake, Rest of peanut butter bar, health pack

I was extremely hungry  after my bike ride. I pretty much downed the whole shake. Chocolate shake tastes the best out of all 3 flavors, and much more tasty with super cold water. No hungry feeling surfaced again until probably around 11pm.

12am: I crave mexican food, laksa.

Day 1 thoughts:

So day 1 was done. I ate all the provided Usana shakes, bars and health packs I was supposed to eat in a day. I found the day to be fine if I was pre-occupied with things to do. The cravings only came when I’m taking a break. Eating those blueberries was my favorite part of the day, unprocessed foods are the best.

Day 1 is about surviving, 4 more days to go.

I’m not a very big milk drinker. Actually, I pretty much never drink milk. I used to drink 2% milk growing up, and as an adult in my mid-20′s, I swtiched to skim, but hardly ever drink it. The marketing team over at Earth’s Own sent me a few vouchers and coupons to try their Almond Fresh milk, and also the Ryza milk. I was able to find Almond Fresh milk in the same milk section at my local Safeway in 3 flavours – Plain, Vanilla, and Chocolate. This time I opted for Vanilla. It’s a lot more expensive than regular milk as it was $4.99 for a 1.89L carton. Regular milk is like $3.50 – $4 for a gallon usually (double the amount).

The first thing that caught my eye was the expiry date – I bought it on July 16, and it said best before Aug 21. That’s quite a long time given that regular milk usually goes bad in about 2 weeks of purchase. That being said, they do have a note that it’s best to consume the milk within 7-10 days of opening.

Pouring it out, I noticed that it did have a slightly tanner colour than regular milk. The milk was very light, kind of like skim milk, along with the milky flavour. However, being that it was vanilla flavoured I could definitely taste the vanilla. Didn’t taste much almond flavour though. The more cups I drank throughout the week I could taste more and more almond flavour, mostly in the after taste. I think it’s because I started shaking the carton before I drank it.

Antioxidants
The vitamin E found in almonds (alpha-tocophenol) is the most easily absorbed antioxidant known. It protects cells from oxidation by removing free radicals, which contribute to aging.

My friend used some sort of Almond Milk with his Cafe Brazil Whey Protein Isolate and said it was amazing. Unfortunately my whey expired so I can’t try it out. Will trying this get me to start drinking more milk? I don’t think so, but with with my other voucher I’ll try the chocolate milk. Also note, I don’t think I’ve ever tried soy milk, so I think I should give that a try first to see which dairy alternative tastes the best.

A few months ago we received 2 cans of Nabob Coffee from BzzAgent. We received a medium roast Breakfast Blend coffee, and a dark roast Full City Dark coffee.

I’m not a super heavy coffee drinker, but I do need my 1 cup a day. I started with the Breakfast Blend, my first sip, was not too bad. As I drank more, I found the coffee to be pretty weak and light, it wasn’t very aromatic either.

The Full City Dark was a little bit stronger, but still not as rich as an Americano from a local coffee shop. It wasn’t over roasted, and it didn’t taste burnt. We tried to make the coffee stronger by adding a bit more coffee when making it, it kind of worked, but it also had a noticeable acidic taste.

I thought the coffee was very very average tasting, and that’s kind of expected. Just like most pre-ground coffees, it is a cheaper alternative than getting espresso shots.

It’s definitely not the best coffee, but if I had absolutely no other choices, I’d still drink it. If you are a regular espresso coffee drinker and are used to dark roast coffees, you probably would not enjoy this a lot.

Nabob Coffee

One of the candies I brought back from Hawaii was Coconut M&Ms. I actually discovered them by accident at the cashier at the ABC store. A local caught me staring at it, and convinced me that they’re good. Actually I didn’t need any convincing, the package sold me at Coconut.

The Coconut M&Ms came in 3 colours. White, Brown and Green. I don’t buy M&Ms usually, but if my memory is right, they are slight bigger than the regular M&Ms. All of the M&M has the signature ‘M’ stamp on it. A few of them have custom designs. Some of them have a coconut tree on besides the ‘M’, some of them has a beach umbrella, and some of them has a sun above the ‘M’.

These chocolates have a very light coconut taste, a lot lighter than I thought it would have. The coconut flavor was just enough for you to notice after a few bites. It’s very very good, very addicting. I liked more it than the regular M&Ms.

Like I mentioned, I found these coconut M&Ms at the ABC store in Hawaii, and surprisingly, the ABC store was the only store that carried them. I tried Wal-mart and Target and Hawaii and had no luck of finding them there. I guess these are not mainstream enough, which kind of makes them special.

After a quick search online, other than Hawaii, you can buy them online, or at a M&M store in the states.

Coconut M&Ms

One of the things I must get at the Tokyo airport is the Shiroi Koibito or so I call them ‘White Lover’ Cookies. It was right at the very top of my shopping list at the Tokyo airport. Unfortunately, to my surprise AND disappointment, they didn’t have them at the shops of the terminal I was at! I was so bummed out, and while walking through the shops I came across the Shiroi Koibito look alike cookies, called Shiroi Mori No Harmony.

The No Harmony cookies looks almost identical to the White Lovers. They were displayed in a section with other products that were also made from Hokkaido. Since both No Harmony and White Lovers are from Hokkaido, I thought, the No Harmony should be pretty good too, and it was also my next best bet.  Something is better than nothing right?

No Harmony cookies are squared sandwich cookies with 2 thin vanilla cookies with a slice of white chocolate in between; just like the White Lovers. At first glace, it looks exactly like a White Lover cookie. When I first opened one, I thought, wow, this is a lot smaller than I imagined. And also these were a lot more rough looking that White Lovers.  The cookies were smaller, and not as thin. When I bit into one, I could tell the difference right away. While it tasted nice, but it was just not as smooth as the White Lovers. The cookies were thicker. There were also less vanilla flavor, but the white chocolate was pretty nice.

No Harmony is the knock off version of the White Lovers. It is a good snack, but the quality is just not up to par with the White Lovers.

Shiroi Mori No Harmony

Royce Fruit Bar Chocolate was one of the new candies I picked up in Japan. I picked this up because I wanted to try something new. There were 2 kinds of these bar chocolates at the store, Nutty Chocolate, and Fruit Bar Chocolate. The Nutty Chocolate was hazelnut, almond, and milk chocolate. It sounded tasty, but it was also a bit too normal. I mean, just looking at the ingredients list, I could already imagine how it’d taste in my mind. the Fruit Bar Chocolate on the other hand, was a bit more interesting.

Apparently, Royce Chocolates is a big deal in Tokyo, or so my Japanese friend says after I brought her some. Score! on my choice. There were 18 chocolate bars in the box, each individually wrapped. The quality of the paper on these pink wrappings were quite nice. A couple of my friend pointed out on the wrappings and I kind of have to admit, yah, they look like tampons.

The fruit bar chocolate was white chocolate, with dried strawberries, mango, cranberry, and almonds. There was one ingredient they didn’t list on the box, which was rice crispy. The rice crispy was a surprise to me when I first bit on it. The chocolate itself was not too sweet, and the dried fruits were still a little chewy. It doesn’t really taste anything chocolate, because it was flavored with mostly strawberry.

Overall, I thought the bar was yummy, but not amazing. It still makes a great snack. Now knowing that Royce is a good chocolate maker in Japan, I should have picked up the Nutty Chocolate too because the fruit bar didn’t really justify their chocolates. Something to get on the next trip to Japan I guess.

Continuing on from my candy shopping at the Tokyo Narita Airport, along with the Green Tea Kit Kat I also brought home Wasabi Kit Kat. Wasabi! How can you see Wasabi flavored kit kat and not bring a box home?

The Wasabi Kit Kats came in a box of 12. Opening the box was fun, because I always liked Japanese packaging, but I didn’t really know what to expect of the taste. The combination of wasabi and chocolates, just doesn’t seem like it would work together. I just imaged it was probably going to be as weird as other spicy chocolates such as chilli chocolates.

When I opened it, it didn’t have much wasabi smell, but I’ve had a lot of experience with wasabi in sushi rolls, they look harmless until you bite into one. I was prepared to have my sinus cleared from the wasabi. My first big bite… sweet.. where’s the wasabi?

The kit kat bars were in light green, coated in white chocolate and green colouring like the Green Tea Kit Kats. And the wasabi flavors were layered in between the wafers in side. The wasabi flavor was actually really light. It tasted like wasabi without the spiciness. The wasabi flavor only comes out after the sweetness of the chocolate, very very subtle, very nice in fact.

I can’t say if I’m happy that the wasabi flavor was so subtle. I liked it a lot, but I also would like to prank some people with these if the wasabi flavor was more intense than that. If you were ever dared to eat this, don’t be afraid, because it’s actually a nice treat.

Bring some of these home if you are visiting Japan soon, they taste good, and they make really popular gifts!

Wasabi Kit Kat

During my trip I had 2 hours of flight lay over in Tokyo Japan. What did that mean? Shopping for Japanese candies! Giving yourself 2 hours in Tokyo Narita Airport is a very dangerous thing, there was just too many weird and unique foods to buy. Luckily, I had self control, and one of the few candies I brought back home was Green Tea KitKat.

These Green Tea Kit Kat came in little boxes, and each box contains 2 packages of kit kats. The kit kat bars are green, and when you bite into it, you will taste the green tea or matcha (green tea powder) flavor right away.

The outer coating is sweet, I don’t believe it has any green tea flavoring there, even though it looks green. I think it is just white chocolate with green colouring. The green tea favoring is from the matcha and it is layered in between the wafers, and the matcha layers are dark green.

I’m normally not a green tea dessert fan, but I liked these a lot. The green tea kit kats doesn’t taste as heavy as regular chocolates and they are not as sweet. I could eat a 2 or 3 packs of these at a time and not get sick of the taste.

The next time you have a chance to stop by Japan, bring some of these home, they make great gifts.

Green Tea Kit Kat

I was on a Hawaiian souvenir shopping mission in Kailua, Kona’s Walmart when my eyes caught Hershey Macadamia Kisses. Macadamia kisses? A Hershey kiss with a whole Macadamia nut inside, wow! I grabbed 2 bags and put them in my basket without a question.

These kisses have blue wrappings, with the white slip printed with ‘Aloha‘ on it. Each piece is milk chocolate with a Macadamia nut inside. These things are very addicting. The combination of chocolate and macadamia nut is as good as chocolate and nutella. I was never a big kiss fan, but I really like these. I wish I bought more than a couple bags.

You can get these at almost any store in Hawaii; Walmart, Target, the ABC store, etc. If you are going or know anyone who is visiting Hawaii soon, definitely ask them to bring some of these back. Otherwise, you can order them online at the official Mauna Loa website for a slightly higher price.

Hershey Macadamia Kisses

My friend asked if I’ve ever had a screamer, and I said nope. He said I have to try it because it’s so good! So after this VW GTI meeting today, he brought me over to Danny’s Market on Garden City and Francis in Richmond. I’ve actually never been to this part of Garden City, but it wasn’t too hard to get to.

We pulled up to a corner store which was next to an atheltic club which looked kind of dinky. The store also had some pizza and hotdogs. But what they are famous for are their screamers! A drink layered with some ice cream and then any slurpee flavour you want! They even have a poster that says it’s a “Soul Refresher” and most importantly the “Best Drink on Earth!” You can mix your soft serve ice cream with any of their slurpee flavours. We ordered just a small Screamer with Root Beer, and they are about $2.90 or so. They had lots of other flavours, as another lady wanted to put in a big order – and some had blueberry, and even capuccino!

So what did it taste like. Well first off, they need bigger straws, which they had before says my friend. The straws were for slurpees though, because they had a bit of a spoon on the end. My first sip was mostly slurpee, as I didn’t mix it up properly yet, and the ice cream was still thick. You really need to mix it up well before it starts tasting good. It takes quite a bit of mixing to get it into a homogenous mixture, but when it does, that’s when it gets really good. When you get a ice cream and root beer slurpee with each sip. It tasted like a root beer float. It was pretty refreshing and really cold. Would be good on a really hot summer day. It’s not the best drink ever though, gimme some good alcohol anyday haha..

I wonder how much sugar this has…I just ordered a small after dinner, but they also have larger sizes, and even more layering. I don’t know if I’d want to drink that. It would definitely cause many brain freezes.

Try it out! If Root Beer is not your thing, they have lots of slurpee flavours. And sell samosa’s and pizzas and other hot food.

I got the Hampton House Chicken Dip-its from Costco, and they are a bit different than other chicken strips because they are like Chicken Fries, and they have potato breading! They are made from all white meat chicken breast.

The box is 2 kg and the chicken strips are packed in a plastic bag. You just have to bake them at 400 degrees for about 15-20 minutes. When I made it, I used a toaster oven and I heated it up for 15 minutes and then flipped it, and cooked it for another 5 minutes. It turned out really good. The skin was very crispy and the middle was pretty tender for frozen food. The potato breading has a bit different from regular breading as it seemed a bit clumpier, but it was still crispy. I also used a tray that was kind of wavy and had holes on the bottom so it would crisp up better.

The suggested serving size is only 5 pieces and is already 260 calories, with 12 g coming from fat (19% of your daily value). I ate almost 15 pieces, so that’s 780 calories and 60% of my daily fat. I guess it’s quite fatty. It also has a lot of sodium. It doesn’t have much nutritional value at all. Per 5 pieces it has 13 g of Protein which is a good amount. Eating just 5 isn’t very filling.

Would I buy it again? Yup. They are a quick snack and pretty good. They are also smaller and there are a lot of chicken fries in the bag.

I was really craving some ice cream or something cold and fruity this weekend, so I decided to pick up some Breyers Real Fruit Swirls Popsicles. It wasn’t on sale, and it was $6.99 for 14 popsicles. 50 cents each isn’t bad, but I’m sure you’d be able to find it on sale. This isn’t my first time having these, but probably my first time having it since summer.

These things are awesome. I love them so much, there are 4 different flavours and they are all good. I could grab any of them out of the box and be happy. The flavours are:

- Blueberry Lemon
- Strawberry Blueberry
- Strawberry Orange
- Strawberry Lemon

Wow lots of strawberry! These bars are really refreshing especially on a warm day. They do a really good job of cooling you down and taste really good. Each fruity flavour combination is fantastic. Normally I wouldn’t like lemon popsicles, but these ones, I do. The fruits compliment each other well. The two different fruits are swirled together thus the weird colour patterns. Occasionally you’ll get some real pieces of fruit and pulp as your sucking on the popsicle. The flavour is far from bland, and you can really taste the fruit juices.

Each popsicle is individual wrapped. For some reason the wrappings are kind of attached at the ends, but you can easily take them apart.

Each bar is only 50 mL and only has 45 calories. There’s zero fat and sodium, but there are 10g of sugars and a tiny bit of protein. In each bar is 4% of your daily vitamin C. So overall there isn’t much nourishment, but it’s a really light fruity snack that you can have and not feel guilty. 45 calories is nothing!

I tried the Thai first. It seems like everyone is playing this sauce off as Sweet Thai or Sweet Thai Chili, it’s almost everywhere.  I wonder if the sauce is the same bottle of Sweet chili sauce that I have at home. Either way, it’s good. So I first unwrapped the sandwich and it is pretty small, but then again it’s only $1.99. If you want to see how big it is, just look at one of the pictures in the gallery (I’m only 5’6″). All the sandwich is, is a breaded chicken strip, with some mayo, and the sweet chili sauce on a little “baguette”. The bread was pretty soft, and a bit toasted, but not crispy. I wonder if it would be better if it was toasted more and like a panini. The chicken wasn’t very crispy for the most part, because I guess the moisture from the sauces moistened it a bit. The outer edges still had a bit of crunch to it, and the chicken was really tender. It was pretty good. The mayo wasn’t very noticeable, and most of the flavour came from the chili sauce.

Next was the grilled pesto chicken McMini. When I opened it up, the piece of grilled chicken was susbstantially smaller than the other one it was almost an inch shorter than the piece of bread. I think I like the pesto one better. This is a pine nut-less pesto sauce to save their butts from people with nut allergies. It also has a mayo sauce. This chicken was a lot more tender and juicy, and better. It’s also probably healthier! The bread was the same, as in it was slightly toasted and browned but not crispy at all. It wasn’t too oily, and the pesto had a really good flavour, and you could taste the garlic but it didn’t have that raw garlic bite.

You don’t have to get the ones I ordered. You can mix and match grilled vs crunchy and thai vs pesto. I just tried these two combinations because I wasn’t that hungry, and I took the word of other Vancouver Food Bloggers.

Overall, is it a good value? I’d say it is at $2. It’s small, but it’s also like a snack. I like them better than the snack wraps, and I’m really getting sick of McDonald’s hamburgers. So at least these McMini’s will give me a reason to visit McDonald’s.

I usually just eat a granola or cereal bar for breakfast because I usually don’t have much of an appetite until I’m at work. I got this big 3 flavour box at Costco, and it has Vanilla, Strawberry and Blueberry bars – 1o of each.

I’m reviewing the Vanilla one this time. I’ll start with the nutritional values first. Each individually wrapped 35 g Yogourt bar is 150 calories. 4.5 g coming from fat, 26 g of carbohydrates, and 2 g of protein. There actually isn’t much nutritional value in these bars now that I look down the list, but it has 6% of your daily Calcium, and 2% of your daily Iron. I guess the 6% of calcium allows them to put the “a source of calcium” seal on it.

Now the vanilla bar is pretty plain. It has your standard granola ingredients in it: rolled oats, whole wheat, brown sugar, and dried coconut. It’s pretty good, but pretty dry. It’s not hard or crispy, but not really soft and chewy – I’d say it’s in the middle. The bottom of the bar is the yogourt coating, which I think is where most of the vanilla flavour comes from. Overall it has a pretty good taste, but I get sick of it easily. I also find that after eating one, I do need to drink water as it dries out my mouth.

Actually, maybe I don’t really need to review all three, because the only difference between the three flavours is that the strawberry one has dried strawberry chunks mixed with the granola, and the blueberry one has dried blueberry mixed with the granola. They do change the flavour, but other than that, it’s pretty much the same. There are some slight variances in the nutritional value too. From what I remember, I think the blueberry vanilla one is my favourite.

I got some Stouffer’s Lean Cuisine Panini’s, the other day and finally decided to give it a try after my P90X Ab Ripper X workout and run. I was quite skeptical about it, because you are supposed to microwave these sandwiches for 3 minutes and they should turn out crispy like a panini. Do they? Just keep reading…

I opened the box, and there’s one open panini wrapped in plastic. The instructions are a bit weird, as you are supposed to use the box as a platform to use in the microwave. Anyways, instructions say you should let it sit out of the freezer for about 5-10 minutes before you microwave it. Take it out of the plastic, and there’s your panini sitting on a (patent pending) microwave tray. The panini is sitting there open faced, and you should center the two pieces on the tray before you microwave it. Put it in the microwave and heat it on high for 2 minutes and 45 seconds to 3 minutes and 15 seconds depending on your microwave. I did 3 minutes, then let it sit for about a minute.

The bread was kind of stuck on the microwave tray, so I had to use a spatula to get it off. The bread was brown, and slightly toasted. I’d say the crispiest part of the sandwich was the crust. It wasn’t soggy at all, but it wasn’t crispy like a panini should be, then again, it’s been microwaved. I guess the tray did a pretty good job. The panini had chicken, spinach, mushrooms, red peppers, and a blend of 3 cheeses (Parmesan, Romano and Asiago) and it made it very gooey. Every bite I took, I had cheese strings going from my mouth to the sandwich. The taste was pretty good. The chicken is pretty much on par with the type of chicken they serve you at Subway. And they had 3 delicious veggies that would go awesome in any panini. I’d probably eat it again if I needed a quick snack or was too lazy to cook.

Now onto the nutritional info. It has 7 g of fat, and 300 calories per panini. It’s 6 Weight Watcher points if you are wondering, and it is alo very high in calcium. Oh yah, I think I got it for $3 a box.

I picked this up last time I went to the States at a Fred Meyer. I’m not sure if they sell it here. I was choosing either this or some yummy Boursin. But for value, the case of the spreadable cheese was so cheaper and there was a lot more (and even a bonus 23% more!). I wanted more for my money this time. I think it was on sale too so it was only like $4.99 for the tub.

I tried on some Dare Water Crackers, which I also picked up, and honestly I was a bit disappointed at first. The taste was very mild, not very garlicy or herby. Next one I smothered my cracker with a lot, and it was sooo delicious. Now there’s lots of flavour. I actually couldn’t stop eating them, but I had to stop myself so that I wouldn’t eat it all in one day. Don’t be stingy when you are using it. You got to smother your cracker with it.

The garlic flavour isn’t that strong. It’s just right. I don’t think it will leave you with garlic breath. The cheese texture is a bit more airy and fluffy than say Philadelphia cream cheese which is a good thing. It’s very easy to spread.

It’s not very healthy though, as of the 70 calories per serving, 60 come from fat.

The cardboard packaging that it comes with has some tip son what you can do with your Rondele cheese too – like wontons, crostini, sandwiches, and pasta sauce.

This weekend I’m in Whistler and I got me some beaver tails! Beaver tails are Canadian sweet pastries. They are thin, deep fried til crispy, and shapes like a beaver’s tail.

This weekend I got some Cinnamon Sugar with Lemon, and Choco Hazelnut Beaver tails. They were both all so yummy.

The cinnamon sugar with Lemon beaver tails was awesome, especially the freshly squeezed lemon juice on top, made the pastry less dry. My American friends had a good point, it tasted sort of tasted like Mexican churros.

The Choco Hazelnut was Beaver Tail with nutella, and powdered sugar on top. Deep fried pastry and nutella, how can you go wrong. It was so yummy when it was still warm. So good.

It has been a while since I got a beaver tail. Right now I am a little bit obsessed with them. A lot of tails are gonna be eaten by me this weekend!

Uni-President Pudding is the one dessert I could never ever get sick of eating.  I grew up with this stuff and I still love it until this day.

What are these things? Imagine flan, but lighter in texture and taste. It’s the Asian version of flan in other words. It consists of 2 parts, the yellow egg custard and the dark brown caramel at the bottom. The yellow custard part is very very soft, silky and very very smooth. The dark brown caramel part doesn’t have a strong caramel taste, instead it is a lot sweeter than the yellow part.

This is a pudding with its own unique taste. There are a lot of other companies making this kind of pudding in Asia, but none as good as this. It comes with its uniquely shaped cup that is the perfect serving size to satisfy your sweet tooth, although I always end up eating 2 at a time. They also come with their own little spoon, so you are good to eat it wherever you go. Asian marketing skills, brilliant.

There are a lot of ways to eat it. You can open it and eat it as is, or you can try to flip it upside down onto a plate that was made famous on their commercials. I personally tried stirring everything together, freezing them and flip them upside down while they’re still in the cup. Does it taste different? No, but it’s fun!

You can also eat them with Asian shaved ice desserts, they’re so so yummy with shaved ice and condensed milk.

Where can you get these? Taiwan. Yes, Taiwan. I’m actually really surprised that T&T supermarket, or other big Asian supermarkets don’t carry these, because these are so good!

If you ever get the chance to visit Taiwan, you HAVE to try these. They’re not hard to find in Taiwan, any 7-11 or grocery stores carry them.

I loved these Shiroi Koibito Cookies ever since my friend introduced me to them over 4 years ago. Shiroi Koibito is one of the products under ISHIYA. Shiroi Koibito in English, or at least on the package, says White Lover. Literally. I’ve been calling them the White Lover Cookies.

I think the White, stand for white chocolate. Shiroi Boibito is basically a square cookie sandwich with 2 very thin crispy cookies with a slice of soft white chocolate in between. The white chocolate kind of looks like cheese.

These cookies are really yummy. The thin crispy cookies has a strong vanilla flavor. The chocolate inside is always soft, smooth, and it’s just melts in your mouth. The cookies looks very simple, and it looks like how it would taste. It’s pretty brilliant.

So where can you get these cookies? They are available at the Tokyo International Airport. Yup, when I visited Japan a few years ago, I ran all over, and only found my luck at the airport before my departure.

This time, my sister brought 2 boxes back from her trip to Japan. It’s been about 3 years since I had one of these, and they still taste the same. I’ve already finish 1 box, they’re so good.

If you are visiting Japan in the future, make sure to bring a couple boxes of these back at the airport. If you are not going Japan anytime soon, they have opened up online ordering, so you can order from their online store. They also have the same cookies, but with milk chocolate, and not as good as the white chocolate ones.

One of the things I look forward to the most when I go to Bikram yoga was drinking a box of coconut water after the 90 minute work out. My bikram yoga class usually sells O.N.E coconut water, and I’ve always loved it. It has been a while since I did a yoga class, so I was looking extra forward to it. But to my disappointment, they stopped selling O.N.E and replaced that with Zico Coconut Water.

The packaging of Zico is identical to O.N.E, just with different graphics, and without a straw. It has almost identical nutrition values as O.N.E but it doesn’t taste as good as O.N.E. While it was still pretty yummy, it was less sweet, and tasted more watery. I still prefer O.N.E better.

One box of coconut water has only 60 calories, 15 carbs, it has tons of potassium, and electrolytes, it’s an excellent drink to get before or during a hard work out. And it is excellent at re-hydrating you after the work out too. Served iced cold, so delicious.

I’ve been searching for coconut water in local stores but I haven’t had any luck yet. I think I’d have to settle to buy them online. Even with that option, I’d still go with O.N.E coconut water (review coming when I get my hands on one).

I think it’s pretty hard to find a cup of bad bubble tea in metro Vancouver nowadays. I’ve been going to Bubble World for a few years now, and they’ve always been one of the better ones since the beginning.

This time my friend and I got a Taro Slush and a Taro Milk Tea with Pearls. I got them for take out because I never liked eating in Bubble World (they also serve Taiwanese food). Then blender is always going off in the restaurant, not a very pleasant environment to eat in. So I really recommend take outs from here.

The Taro Slush was good as usual. It was blended perfectly, no ice chunks in there. The taro flavor was there, and it wasn’t too sweet. I sometimes find they over cook their pearls, but my friend said the pearls were good that night in his Pearl Milk Tea. This is the one part where they are not consistent with, but the drink itself wise is always pretty consistent.

This is a place to consider if you are craving for a bubble tea.

I had my very first Vietnamese sub at Hen Long Market in Surrey, and their Vietnamese sub has been my favorite since then. I remember when these subs used to be $2.00 dollars each, and now they are $2.90 each. The 90 cents increase in price over 10 years is not bad at all, still really cheap for a sub.

They have 4 different kinds of Vietnamese subs, The Special Sub is the one you want to get. It’s got 3 kinds of Vietnamese ham, liver paté, cucumber, cilantro, pickled daikon, pickled carrots, hot pepper (optional), and mayo.

This sub, is so delicious. The ingredients are always fresh, they compliment each other so well, there isn’t a single ingredient in there that over powers the other. The picked daikon and carrots added a really nice acidic and sweet flavor to the sub, it’s one of my favorite parts about this sandwich.

The french bread is fresh, but not as fresh as Au Petité cafe‘s. I definitely like what Hen Long’s put in between the bread better.

I think the ultimate Vietnamese sub would be Au Petité Café’s fresh bread and Hen Long’s ingredients.

Last month I signed up for a free Kashi Toasted Berry Crisp sample online, it arrived a couple days ago, and I didn’t wait long to eat it.

The sample box had just enough cereal for a small bowl. This cereal consisted of naturally sweetened multi-grain clusters, cranberries, and wild blueberries.

The clusters were light, the texture is puffy. They held up to the milk pretty well, they didn’t get soggy too fast.  It was really nice that Kashi didn’t use super dried out fruits in cereals like some other brands. The cranberries and blueberries were really good. They had dried fruit consistency, and they were chewy. I think the fruit was what made a difference between this cereal and other fruit cereal by other brands, the fruits didn’t look or taste artificial.

The cereal had just enough sweetness in it for me, but if you take a look at the nutrition values, it does have 13g of sugar in one small box. It might be too sweet for some people.

I’m not sure if this cereal is already on the market or it is still at its taste testers stage, but I enjoyed this cereal a lot. And if it ever makes it on the market, I would buy it.

I have been eating these Special K Fruit Crisps for about 2 weeks now. I didn’t know about these until they caught my eye while I was grocery shopping. They have become one of my favorite cereal bars.

These fruit crisps are delicious. The texture is actually similar to a pop tart, but with thinner crusts. The crusts are laced with a a swirl of vanilla icing, and they are really thin and really crispy. The filling is soft and not too sweet, together with the crust it gave the bar a little bit of chewiness.

There are 2 flavors you can choose from: Strawberry and Blueberry. Strawberry was my favorite because to me it had a little bit more flavor than the blueberry. One pack contains 2 fruit crisps, with a totally of 100 calories. Yep, TWO fairly regular sized bars have only 100 calories. That’s pretty good.

Special K did a good job on these, because they don’t taste artificial like most of the weight watch foods. It would pass taste tests easily even on kids. You can eat these to satisfy your sweet tooth without feeling too guilty about it.

I used to eat these Butter Coconut Cookies a lot when I was a kid, in Taiwan. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have never seen these cookies being sold at regular supermarkets. So when I was on a mission to go find ghetto fermented tofu at an Asian supermarket, I came across these on the shelves, and brought a pack home.

These cookies have a really distinctive packaging, as you can see it is silver. There wasn’t a cookie tray to hold the cookies when you open the package, they were just cookies neatly and snugly stacked.

These cookies are absolutely delicious. They are the crunchy type of cookies. They were thin and had a nice glossy coat of sugar on the surface. The texture was a little flaky, just a tiny bit. They were sweet, a little buttery. The coconut flavor wasn’t very strong in these cookies, but you can still taste it. I haven’t had one of these in maybe 10 years, they tasted just as I remembered. Eat them together with a cup of tea, or a glass of milk, so yummy.

If you like cookies, and feel a little adventurous, stop by your local Asian supermarket, and grab a pack home for under $3.00 dollars.

Butter Coconut Cookies

Beard Papa’s makes some serious cream puffs. Ever since the first time I’ve had them, they’ve been one of my usual places to get desserts.

These cream puffs are big, probably a size of a baseball. The cream puffs have a really thin fluffy crust, and A LOT of vanilla flavored cream. Every bite you take you are guaranteed to ooze out some of the cream at one part of the puff. It can get messy to eat, but sometimes the messiest food are the yummiest.  The cream is sweet, light, very delicious.

The cream also come in other flavors such as green tea, chocolate and strawberry. Unless they come out with a really good coconut flavored cream (hint hint to Beard Papa’s), the original is still my favorite.

The puffs are made fresh, so even with all that cream inside, it is never soggy. They also stay together pretty well after a couple hours, but of course these are the best when fresh!

The Portuguese Egg Tarts are one of my favorite pastry desserts. What’s a Portuguese Egg Tart? A Portuguese Egg Tart is basically like a regular Egg Tart, but with very flaky, and puffy crusts, and custard filling that is caramelized a little on the top. In other words, the best kind of egg tarts.

I usually get these delicious custard cups at the bakery in my local T&T Supermarket. You can buy these individually, or you can get them in a box of 6 for around $7 dollars. I almost never leave T&T without at least one of these egg tarts, they’re just soo yummy. The crusts are never dry, they are buttery, the yummy kind of buttery. The custard is soft with crème brûlée consistency. Mmmm….so good!

There are other bakeries that sells these egg tarts too, but T&T is still my place to go because of their locations. And also of course they make really good egg tarts.

We came across JBD Cookies on Twitter. After checking out their website we knew we needed to get our hands on those delicious looking cookies. So last Sunday, we placed orders on their Pecan Pie Pleasure, and Raspberry Linzers cookies.

These cookies were so yummy! I could not have enough of the Pecan Pie Pleasure. The size of these cookies were perfect, there were delicious pecan fillings with the soft and chewy dough on every single bite. I liked these a lot.

The Raspberry Linzer heart cookies were a lot bigger than we thought they would be, and didn’t look exactly the same as the pictures from the website. On their website, there were powdered sugar on top of them, but the cookies we got didn’t have any, I guess they got melted during the shipping process. Looks aside, they did taste really yummy! I really liked the raspberry jam on it. Mmm is it bad that I’m eating them as I’m blogging?

There was one really nice surprise I found about these cookies. It was that these did not taste or look artificial. They are definitely home made, and they gave me a comforting feeling as I ate them. It felt like it was made by a next door neighbor or a friend, I actually didn’t mind the tiny imperfections on the looks of these cookies, it made them taste real, and that’s a pretty cool thing considering it was shipped from a store in Toronto.

Picking 2 out of 9 kinds of cookies wasn’t easy because they all looked really good. We decided on the Raspberry Linzers because we wanted to do some reviews for Valentine’s day, and Pecan Pie Pleasure because we love pecans. An order of cookies consisted of 15 cookies  and the Raspberry Linzers, they came in 12, we think it’s because they were bigger cookies.

An order of cookies was $32 dollars USD. $32 dollars for 15 cookies?! Yes, we thought it was expensive too, but after eating them we found how the price can be justified. Shipping was included, and it was xpress post, it came with a little bag that was presented like a gift, and most importantly, these cookies were delicious. These are prefect gifts to send for your friends, family, your valentine this year, or to yourself if you simply just want to indulge the yummy-ness of these cookies.

I’m already thinking about my next order for their other cookies, get your hands on JBD Cookies too!

These are my new favorite crackers, err.. ‘chips’. I’m not sure why these are called chips when they look and taste like crackers, so I’m going to call them crackers.

These Wheat Thins Toasted Chips has 3 flavors: Great Plains Multigrain, Garden Valley Veggie, and Garlic and Rosemary. I bought the Garlic and Rosemary.

These crackers were very flavorful and not dry at all. When I first opened them, I could got a immediate smell of rosemary rushing out of the bag. Mmm! They are crunchy, and they come in nice bite size pieces. But if you eat too much of these, they will get really salty.

The packaging of these chips is excellent. It has a reusable adhesive tab, so you can keep them fresh until the next time you’re going to eat them. It’s something I think all chips bags should have.

These crackers have 50% less fat than leading potato chips (I wonder what that is). It is whole wheat, so it’s a really good alternative to eating regular chips if you’re looking for something to snack on.

Wheat Thins Toasted Chips

I am a fan of cereal bars. They are awesome for snacks, for breakfasts, and for something to chew on when you’re bored. Today I had a Nutri-Grain Sweet and Salty bar.

This bar was very chocolaty, as half of the bar was coated with chocolate. My first couple bites of it were really sweet, all I could taste was chocolate and not much of anything else. There were 2 types of Sweet and Salty bars, Chocolate and Peanuts and Chocolate and Almonds. The one that I was eating was chocolate and almonds, I couldn’t taste the almond at all.

Just as I was wondering just where the ‘salty’ part comes in, I finally got a taste of if half way through my bar, but it was still a very light hint of saltiness. I think this bar would go really well with coffee or tea, but a little too sweet on it’s own. Texture wise, it is not dry, and pretty chewy. The almond chucks were pretty big, even though they are a little tasteless.

Also, it does have 60 calories per bar, and that it is around 20-40 more calories than regular cereal bars.

A few days ago I got baked… cheetos! These baked cheetos looks identical to the real cheetos except it is lighter in weight, and has less cheese powders on them. Unlike the regular cheetos, your fingers won’t turn orange after eating like 2 of these. It is less salty, and a little dryer than regular cheetos. But they don’t taste artificial, they actaully taste good! For what it is, being baked duplicates of the original version and all, Frito-Lay did a good job on these. This would be closest to the real thing than a lot of the other reduced fat chips.

Baked cheetos claim that they have 45% less fat than the leading cheese flavored snack (I wonder what that is). But is it really better for you? Well, all junk foods are bad for you, but with 45% less fat, and with its taste, this is a pretty good alternative to the real thing. Just eat in moderation.
